President Obama and Congress have begun negotiations over the federal budget. Not on their agenda:  moving away from militarism in domestic and foreign policy. That’s why AFSC is hosting a conversation about real solutions for building peace in 2015. Join AFSC experts on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, for a Google Hangout on the budget talks:

  • Raed Jarrar serves as AFSC’s policy impact coordinator at the Office of Public Policy and Advocacy in Washington, D.C. Since immigrating to the U.S. in 2005, he has worked on political and cultural issues pertaining to U.S. engagement in the Arab and Muslim worlds.
  • Aura Kanegis serves as director of AFSC’s Office of Public Policy and Advocacy. Prior to joining the Service Committee, she served as director of campaigns and Iraq Peace Campaign director for the Friends Committee on National Legislation.
  • Pedro Rios serves as the director of AFSC’s U.S./Mexico Border Program. Pedro oversees a program that documents abuses by law enforcement agencies, works with many community groups, advocates for policy change, and interacts with migrant communities.
  • Lewis Webb is a program coordinator in AFSC’s New York City office. He has leadership roles in the Campaign to End the New Jim Crow and the Quaker Network to End Mass Incarceration.

In the summer of 1972 AFSC’s New York office had a “court watching” project in Yonkers. This group of young people observed court room proceeding, researched and monitored injustices in the system, and met with politicians and community members on their findings.

How does a 16-year-old evolve into a bank robber?

In Evolution of a Criminal, filmmaker Darius Clark Monroe searches for the answers — about himself. An honest journey of reflection and a personal search for redemption, the documentary premieres tonight (1/12) on independentlenspbs.

An interesting look at forgiveness and restorative justice.
